Dr. Mella is passionate about delivering the very best results to his patients and continuing the legacy of the Hilger Face Center with international mission work helping both children and adults with facial deformities, such as cleft lip and palate or other congenital and traumatic facial deformities.

Dr. Mella’s track record of excellence opened the door to the best training in the world in facial plastic and reconstructive surgery. After graduating magna cum laude from Brigham Young University, he earned his Medical Doctor at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio where he graduated number one in his class and was inducted into the AOA honor medical society. He felt drawn to the artistic and technical challenge of facial plastic and reconstructive surgery and pursued surgical training at the University of Virginia alongside leading experts in the field. He was then selected as the best of best young talents to complete his training at the University of Minnesota, widely recognized as the premier fellowship in facial plastic and reconstructive surgery.

While completing his fellowship training he fell in love with the people of Minnesota and the team at the Hilger Face Center. “It is a profound privilege to be trusted by my patients to operate on their face, as doing so directly impacts their identity and how they interact with the world around them. I honor that privilege and love seeing self confidence blossom after surgery.”

When Dr. Mella is not at work, he enjoys family time with his wife and four kids, as well as fly fishing, skiing, and wood working.
