Bio

Michael Howell, MD, is a sleep medicine physician who specializes in neurology and sleep health. His clinical care and interests include REM sleep behavior disorder, sleep walking and related disorders, sleep-related eating disorder, violent sleep behaviors and traumatic brain injury. He sees patients at the University of Minnesota Health Riverside Professional Building and at Fairview Southdale Hospital. An associate professor in the University of Minnesota Medical School Department of Neurology, Dr. Howell serves as program director of the Clinical Sleep Medicine Fellowship at Hennepin County Medical Center and the University of Minnesota. He is also the medical director of the Fairview Sleep Center – Edina. His research interests include characterizing the relationship between sleep and neurological disorders, and determining whether these processes are reversible with current or experimental therapies. He is also interested in the relationship between sleep and obesity. Specifically, Dr. Howell is investigating whether poor sleep as a result of sleep deprivation or sleep disorders leads to or contributes to the current global obesity pandemic.
