Bio

Bernhard Hering, MD, is internationally renowned for his expertise in islet cell transplantation for the treatment of Type 1 diabetes. He sees patients at the Schulze Diabetes Institute. His research focuses on finding innovative cell-based therapies to restore blood glucose control and insulin independence for people with type 1 diabetes. Additionally, he is committed to exploring new sources of islet cells through xenotransplantation. Dr. Hering is also a professor in the Division of Transplantation in the Department of Surgery at the University of Minnesota Medical School, the medical director of the Collaborative Islet Transplant Registry (CITR), and has also served as president of the Cell Transplant Society and as councilor of the International Pancreas and Islet Transplant Association.
