Bio

Andrew (Andy) Barnes, MD, MPH, is a developmental and behavioral pediatrician who specializes in pediatric behavioral and mental health, developmental-behavioral pediatrics and pediatric autism. His clinical work with children and families focuses on helping children gain mastery of their own mind-body interactions. Some of the ways that he helps children become more competent in this regard include teaching them how to use biofeedback, mindfulness and self-hypnosis to help themselves better regulate their own thoughts, feelings and actions. His goal is to help children and adolescents (and their caregivers) to help themselves by teaching them how they can master the interactions between mind and body. Dr. Barnes is an assistant professor in the University of Minnesota Medical School’s Department of Pediatrics, where he directs the Developmental Behavioral Pediatrics Fellowship. He is also a faculty member of the University of Minnesota Center for Spirituality & Healing. His research interests include promoting resilience in children under stress, the interplay between behavior and biology, and self-regulation of children growing up in homeless families.
