Bio

Dr. Adam Gottula is an emergency medicine and critical care physician with a research focus on advancing care for patients experiencing out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA). His work aims to transform how life-saving interventions, particularly extracorporeal cardiopulmonary resuscitation (ECPR), are delivered within prehospital and regional systems of care. Dr. Gottula’s research spans both preclinical and clinical studies in ECPR, critical care transport, and OHCA system design. He has led the development of a geographic information systems (GIS) model to predict ECPR eligibility and identify geographic disparities in access to care. His work has shown that nearly 90% of patients who would likely benefit from ECPR are located beyond the reach of current hospital-based systems when transported by ground EMS. He further demonstrated that a prehospital, helicopter-based ECPR system could increase access by more than fourfold. His contributions have been recognized nationally, including the Best Fellow Research Presentation award from the National Association of EMS Physicians and recognition as a Young Innovator Award finalist at the Wolf Creek Conference. Dr. Gottula joins the University of Minnesota’s Departments of Anesthesiology and Emergency Medicine and the Center for Resuscitation Medicine, where he is excited to investigate the implementation and impact of prehospital ECPR systems in the Twin Cities and surrounding regions. Outside of medicine, Dr. Gottula enjoys staying active through Peloton rides and running, as well as spending time outdoors fishing or working on home projects. Most of all, he loves time with his wife and two young daughters (ages 3 and 1), who keep life joyful, busy, and full of purpose.
