Melasma Treatments Hilger Face Center Minneapolis, MN

What is Melasma?

Melasma is a form of hyperpigmentation caused by a rush of hormones. Many women may develop melasma after pregnancy or after discontinuing birth control. Hence the popular nickname “pregnancy mask.” Melasma is particularly stubborn because it has memory. Melanocytes in the skin may become triggered by UV light and heat which causes the pigment to reappear. Therefore, targeted treatments during the winter will provide the best outlook for fading the appearance of melasma.

Treatments for Melasma

The most effective treatment for melasma at the Hilger Face Center is a VI Peel. A VI Peel may be recommended by our esthetician or by one of our board-certified surgeons as a remedy for discoloration. VI peels are mid-depth chemical peels that contain TCA (Trichloroacetic Acid), Phenol, Salicylic Acid, Retinoic acid, and Ascorbic acid (Vitamin C). This powerhouse blend of ingredients will leave skin looking brighter. The peel may also be recommended as a treatment for acne, skin texture, and fine lines. Results can be seen with just one VI peel, however a series of 3 would be recommended to drastically reduce the appearance of melasma.

At-Home Care for Melasma

The way you take care of your skin at home is important for achieving long lasting results with skincare treatments. Pharmaceutical-grade skin care products will be the most effective. We recommend incorporating Vitamin C and Hydroquinone into your skincare regimen. Both ingredients are clinically proven to brighten hyperpigmentation. Another critical component of home care is sunscreen usage. While you are in the process of eliminating pigment, an SPF 40 or higher is recommended since the sun can exacerbate melasma. Hats, sunglasses, and face coverings also help protect your skin from intense UV- exposure.
